For most of its life, the Handshake AI fellowship was closed to anyone outside the United States. That has started to change. Handshake has begun advertising India specific expert roles, Indian phone numbers now work for account verification, and Indian applicants have been reporting successful signups since roughly the middle of 2026.
This guide covers what Handshake AI India actually is, and you can open an account here whenever you are ready. We cover who qualifies, what it pays, how the signup works, and the part almost nobody writes about: how the income is taxed once it lands in your Indian bank account. We have also included the problems contributors report, because you should know them before you spend a weekend on assessments.
Check this before you invest time. Handshake’s general fellowship pages still carry wording that you must be based in the United States with valid United States work authorisation, while at the same time the company is advertising India based expert roles. Both things are currently true on their own site. So apply to a specific India role, and confirm your eligibility during signup rather than assuming it. If you are asked for United States work authorisation and cannot provide it, stop there.
Is Handshake AI India available for signups?
Short answer: yes, and it is recent. Handshake AI India opened up somewhere around the middle of 2026, and you can sign up on Handshake AI directly.
Three things point the same way. Handshake is publishing India specific expert listings, for example a Biology Expert (India) role recruiting between July and December 2026. Indian mobile numbers are supported for the SMS verification step. And Indian applicants have been reporting completed signups in community forums since around July 2026.
What has not caught up is Handshake’s own general marketing copy, which still describes the fellowship as United States only. That mismatch is normal when a company opens a new market before updating every page, but it does mean you should verify at the point of signup rather than trusting any single page, including this one.
What Handshake AI actually is
Handshake AI is a paid, remote programme where people with real subject expertise help train and test large language models for AI labs. You are not building models. You are the human standard they are measured against.
In practice the work is some combination of three things. Writing prompts in your own field that are hard enough to expose where a model is weak. Judging model answers and scoring them. And correcting wrong answers properly, with sources, so the correction can be used as training material.
Handshake states it has paid more than 100 million dollars to over 100,000 fellows, and its chief executive has publicly said the work is moving away from generalists towards specialists in maths, science and technical fields. That direction matters for how you should read the pay figures below.
Who can actually join from India
The Handshake AI India listings are aimed at genuine domain depth rather than general writing skill. The Biology Expert (India) listing, as one example, asks for masters or doctoral students, graduates, or postdoctoral researchers, and specifically wants the ability to turn complex research knowledge into clear, structured task instructions.
Translated: you need a field you know properly, and you need to be able to write about it precisely. If your background is finance, accounting, law, medicine, engineering or a hard science, you are the target. If your pitch is that you write well in general, you will be competing in the lowest paid and highest risk part of the platform.
What Handshake AI pays
Handshake publishes a rate card for its United States roles. At the time of writing it looks like this.
| Role | Published rate |
|---|---|
| AI Evaluation Specialist | 40 dollars an hour |
| Software Engineer | 65 dollars an hour |
| FP&A Analyst | 80 dollars an hour |
| Energy Professional | 80 dollars an hour |
| Philosophy Expert | 120 dollars an hour |
| Game Developer or Designer | 125 dollars an hour |
| PCB Tool Specialist | 125 dollars an hour |
Read that table carefully. Those are the published United States rates. The India specific listings we reviewed did not state a rate at all. So do not assume a Handshake AI India role pays the same as the equivalent United States role, and get the rate in writing before you accept a project. Handshake does say rates are shown upfront and fixed for the duration of a project, which is genuinely better than platforms that adjust rates mid project.
You can check the current roles and rates on Handshake directly, since the card changes. The FP&A Analyst line is the interesting one for readers of this site. Financial planning and analysis is explicitly a paid specialism here, which makes this one of the few AI training programmes where an accounting or finance background is the qualification rather than a side note.
How to sign up for Handshake AI India
- Create the account and verify. An Indian mobile number works for the SMS step. If your carrier blocks international SMS or you have DND filters on, the code may not arrive, so clear that first.
- Build the profile properly. Field, credentials, and the specifics of your expertise. This is what routes you to higher paid work, so it is worth an hour rather than ten minutes.
- Confirm eligibility. This is the step where location and authorisation get checked. Do not skip past it.
- Set up payment. Payouts run through Deel and you accept contractor terms here.
- Pass the assessment. Budget roughly 50 to 60 minutes.
- Do the training. Around two to five hours covering how the models work and how to write good prompts.
- Claim tasks. Work is asynchronous, and how much is available depends on client demand that week.

How Handshake AI income is taxed in India
Handshake AI India income is taxed as professional income, and this is the part that gets left out of every other guide. It is where people get caught. You are an independent contractor being paid by a foreign payer. Nobody is withholding anything for you, which feels great monthly and painful in July.
How Handshake AI income is treated in India
It is professional income, and it is fully taxable
If you are resident in India, your worldwide income is taxable here. Money earned from a United States payer for work you did sitting in India is Indian taxable income, and the fact that it arrived in dollars changes nothing about that. It is professional or business income, taxed at your normal slab rate.
No TDS means the whole liability is yours
An Indian employer would deduct TDS every month and you would barely notice. A foreign payer does not. Nothing is deducted at source, so the entire tax has to come from you, and the tax department expects most of it during the year rather than at the end.
That usually means advance tax. If your total tax liability for the year is 10,000 rupees or more, advance tax applies in instalments, and missing them attracts interest under sections 234B and 234C. Our Section 234 interest calculator will show you what that costs, and the take home salary calculator helps if this income sits on top of a salary.
A practical rule that contributors use, and that holds up reasonably well: set aside about a third of every payout for tax before you treat any of it as spendable.
GST: this is an export of services
Supplying services from India to a recipient outside India is an export of services, which is zero rated. So there is no GST to charge on the income itself. Registration is a separate question and depends on your aggregate turnover across everything you do, not just this work. If your total receipts are comfortably under the services threshold, registration generally does not arise. If you are near it or already registered, get this checked properly, because zero rated supplies still have to be reported correctly.
Keep the paperwork from day one
Keep your inward remittance advice or foreign inward remittance certificate from your bank, your Deel payout statements, and a simple month by month record of what you earned and when it landed. If a question ever comes up about foreign receipts, that file is the whole answer, and reconstructing it two years later is miserable.
One thing worth flagging: presumptive taxation under section 44ADA is sometimes suggested for this kind of work, and it can be attractive because it taxes only half of gross receipts. Whether you actually qualify depends on whether your work falls inside the specified professions and on your receipts for the year. It is genuinely worth asking a chartered accountant rather than assuming, because getting it wrong is expensive to unwind.
The problems nobody puts in the brochure
Before you commit real weekends to Handshake AI India, read this. We would rather you hear it from us than find out three weeks in.
- Payments have been slow at times. Contributors reported 30 to 45 day delays during the first quarter of 2026, against a normal 7 to 14 days.
- There were lawsuits in early 2026 alleging withheld payouts. Handshake remains an established company, but this is not a hypothetical risk.
- Accounts get suspended and the criteria are not published. Some contributors report suspensions on work that looked identical to previously approved tasks, with slow and unclear appeals.
- Work is lumpy. One fellow described three weeks at 25 hours followed by a week with nothing at all. You cannot plan a monthly budget around it.
- Quality rejection rules are opaque. Unlike some competing platforms, Handshake does not publish the rubric it marks you against upfront.
The pattern in all of this is consistent and worth stating plainly: if you are a genuine subject matter expert, the pay is better than almost anywhere else. If you are a generalist, you take most of the risk for the least money.
Is it worth it?
Handshake AI India suits you if you have real credentials in a specific field, you want a few hours a week of high rate work rather than a second job, and you can absorb an uneven month without stress. Finance and accounting professionals are in a genuinely good position here, given FP&A is a named specialism on their own rate card. If that sounds like you, create your account and work through the assessment.
It does not suit you if you need predictable monthly income, if your value proposition is general writing, or if you would struggle to handle your own advance tax and record keeping.
Handshake AI India: frequently asked questions
Is Handshake AI available in India?
Yes. Handshake AI has begun recruiting in India and now advertises India specific expert roles, and Indian mobile numbers work for account verification. Be aware that the general eligibility wording on Handshake’s main fellowship pages still says you must be based in the United States, so check the specific role you are applying to and confirm your eligibility during signup rather than assuming.
What is Handshake AI?
Handshake AI is a paid, remote programme where subject matter experts help train and evaluate large language models for AI labs. The work involves writing prompts in your own field, judging the quality of model answers, and correcting them with sources. Handshake says it has paid over 100 million dollars to more than 100,000 fellows.
Who is eligible from India?
The India listings target people with real domain depth, typically a masters, a doctorate, postdoctoral experience or equivalent professional standing. Handshake’s chief executive has said the work is shifting from generalists to specialists, so a finance, accounting, law, medicine, engineering or science background helps far more than general writing ability.
How much does Handshake AI pay?
Handshake’s published rate card for its United States roles runs from about 40 dollars an hour for general evaluation work up to about 125 dollars an hour for specialist roles, with an FP&A Analyst listed at 80 dollars an hour. The India specific listings we reviewed did not publish a rate, so confirm the rate in writing before you accept a project.
How many hours a week does it take?
The India listings we saw state roughly 10 to 20 hours a week. Work is remote and asynchronous, so you choose when to do it, but the volume available depends on client demand rather than on how much you want to work.
How do you get paid?
Payouts are processed through Deel, a contractor payment platform. You are engaged as an independent contractor, not an employee, so nothing is withheld for you and you are responsible for your own tax.
Is Handshake AI income taxable in India?
Yes. If you are resident in India, this is professional income and is taxable at your slab rate whether or not the money is paid from abroad. No Indian TDS is deducted by a foreign payer, so the entire tax liability sits with you, usually through advance tax during the year and then your income tax return.
Do I need GST registration for Handshake AI income?
Providing services from India to a recipient outside India is an export of services. Export is zero rated, so no GST is payable on it, but registration can still become relevant once your aggregate turnover crosses the threshold for services. Whether you need to register depends on your total receipts from all sources, not only this work, so check your own position with a professional.
Is Handshake AI legitimate?
Handshake is an established company and the programme is real, with published rates and a large number of paid fellows. That said, contributors have reported payment delays, account suspensions without published criteria, and inconsistent task availability, and there were lawsuits in early 2026 alleging withheld payouts. Treat it as real but imperfect, and do not count on it as your only income.
Is it better for specialists or generalists?
Specialists. The reported pattern is consistent: people with advanced credentials get steadier work, higher rates and fewer suspensions, while generalists carry most of the rejection and suspension risk for much lower pay.
